San Diego
In the San Diego Mayor's special election in July, 2005, a voter was charged
$8200 for one and a half day with four teams counting.
Marin County
After the special election Nov. 8, 2005, a group requested a recount of one
proposition in one precinct in Marin County. They
were quoted $3502 to recount poll site ballots, $5808 for all ballots,
plus a $17000 charge for presorting the ballots.
In 2004, Frank Egger asked for a recount of 3,000 absentee ballots in
the city of Fairfax. He was told he needed to deposit $18,000.
Last year, a Marin county race was decided by 0.35%. A county wide
recount for that race was estimated at $160,000 to recount 143,000
votes.
2007 Update for Marin:
The approximate cost of a recount is as follows:
Day 1: $1,900. This includes planning, publication, notification
of the candidates as required by the Elections Code, and one recount
board.
Day 2 and following: $500. This amount will increase depending on
the number of precincts to be recounted and the number of recount
boards needed.
